There has been much coverage in the local press recently around smoke control areas and the penalties for the public if they break the rules. Some of these articles give the impression that there are new rules for the use of solid fuel at home and that the fines for non-compliance have increased when neither is the case.

The Stove Industry Association (SIA) has welcomed the announcement today (19th September 2024) by Alasdair Allan, Minister for Climate Action in Scotland, that wood burning stoves will be permitted for installation in new build homes, heralding it as a “common sense and progressive step”.

The ministerial Direction, which comes after months of campaigning by the SIA on behalf of its members and the wider stove industry, has been issued to all councils in Scotland today.

The Stove Industry Association (SIA) has sought urgent clarification from the Scottish Government in relation to what the Association considers to be ambiguity and a lack of consistency within the definition of terms in the New Build Heat Standard (6.11 Heating and hot water – direct emission heating system) which came into force on 1st April 2024

Particulate emissions from “domestic combustion” fell between 2021 and 2022 with a 3.9% reduction in PM10 and a 4% reduction PM2.5 from “domestic combustion”. The latest data also shows that PM2.5 emissions from the domestic use of wood fuel specifically fell by 2.7%.

The latest Defra data covers the same period in which stove sales, as reported by SIA manufacturing members (representative of approximately 80% of total UK sales), hit a record high.
